First rate stuff. This is something I will continue to give thought as I seek to be useful and used in my church and those I touch. Thanks for this.

Peace,

Darin, I'm unsure about your questions.

If you are asking me what I think ministry to a specific group looks like, I'll need to know which group you are asking about. I will briefly discuss three groups in hopes of answering your questions.

Many autistic adults have sensory problems that we must address. I can see that manifesting itself in different ways. It may just be a section of the church that is has lower lighting and remains perfume free. It could be using a special chapel for a special worship hour like so many of us do for foreign language speaking groups now. Just consider bringing fellowship to folks whose disability is social interaction. This could easily be very unconventional.

Autism parents need special love. They not only need someone to facilitate worship for them by providing child care they need specific spiritual attention. These parents will have varying levels of acceptance of their child as a person. They will have varying levels of acceptance for their child's disability as something other than evil. They can easily hold themselves in to high or too low esteem as a parent. And finally their divorce rates are very high.

Physical disabilities just need to be allowed for. Space to sit or lay with special equipment is an easy fix.

Finally, my church has a class for folks with a low IQ. I am involved in it. I am amazed by the understanding and leadership from folks who have often been relegated to a childlike status. Special classes like this are awesome! If you have one in church, schedule some time to attend it.

Darin, the most important thing is that we learn to enjoy each other. Fellowship with folks I used to ignore has become an uplifting and motivating experience for me.

What would that be? How are they included or made to feel a part? Is it just people who can take some time? Someone else sent me to your blog so maybe you have explained it before.

Thanks.

What a blessing this post was to me today. I have been so completely overwhelmed lately that I forget to stop and look at those around me who might just need a simple request such as this senior citizens. My prayer is God will stop my whirling mind when he has an opportunity for me to give, even if it be only a smile, to those with whom I come in contact.

Thanks for the touching post, Zane. I've got another blogger friend who has an autistic son who lives near Atlanta and she has lamented the same very things you talk about. I'm going to send her over here to read this and to check out your blog. Her son is a little younger than yours, but growing fast.

Thanks!

Wow! I needed this today. It is easy to get caught up in ourselves and forget to see what others are going through...Thanks for the reminder.
